Simple Ways To Show Emotional Support to a Loved One in Need

Simple Ways To Show Emotional Support to a Loved One in Need Post Image

Seeing someone you care about in emotional distress can be incredibly difficult, especially when you want to help but don’t know what to do. Sometimes, the right thing to do is much simpler than you might think. Whether that person you care about is grieving, unwell, or going through a difficult time in their life, small gestures can mean a lot. We’ll show you a few simple ways to show emotional support to a loved one in need so that you can be their rock as they go through a tough period.

Take Care of Their Mundane Tasks

When someone goes through a particularly trying time, simple, everyday tasks can become a struggle. Things like grocery shopping or cleaning up after themselves might be a lot to handle on top of their distress. Stepping in to do these mundane tasks can show that person that you want to help in whatever way you can, no matter how minor it may seem.

Be a Sounding Board

One of the best ways to show emotional support to a loved one is simply to be there to listen to them. When people go through intensely difficult situations, they may need someone there who will just listen to their struggles. Many people will immediately try to begin fixing the issue in some way, but that isn’t always what that person needs. It’s enough just to be there and listen attentively to what they are going through.

Allow Them Some Space

It may seem counterintuitive, but sometimes, leaving a loved one alone can actually help them. You must judge this on a case-by-case basis, but some people heal better when they have time and space to themselves. If you want to help but don’t know how, don’t be afraid to ask if they would prefer you leave them alone for a while. Some people need that time away from others to process the difficult things they’re going through.

Stay Connected to Them

At the same time, you don’t ever want your loved one to feel like they are alone in their pain. Again, different people have different needs, but even the most introverted person doesn’t want to feel completely alone. Even if they asked for space, try to stay connected to them through text or the internet. Let them know that you’ll be there for them when they need the support, so they don’t feel so isolated.

Here at Soulistic Hospice, we understand that life can be difficult if you try to go through it alone. That’s why we offer emotional and hospice counseling to better serve those who need a strong support system.
